A cosmetic surgery to the eyelids (blepharoplasty) is used to produce a more youthful appearance around the eyes and to correct “eyebags”. Upper-lid blepharoplasty usually comprises excision of excess or redundant upper eyelid skin, together with a portion of excess underlying muscle and fat to give a more youthful appearance to the upper eyelid.
Because the Initial assessment is important we offer a Consultation with our Plastic surgeon in Hammersmith or Harley Street in order to establish if a component of brow descent also exists as a result of aging. If this is present then an endoscopic brow-lift will be required either as an alternative or in addition to upper-lid blepharoplasty to achieve the optimal aesthetic result.
Surgery to the lower eyelids (lower-lid blepharoplasty) comprises a number of techniques to smooth the lid-cheek interface and may also be used to improve the contour of the lower lid, cheek and mid-face. The scars are placed in the natural creases at the top of the upper eyelid in upper lid blepharoplasty and just below the eyelashes in lower lid blepharoplasty and heal extremely well.
Upper lid blepharoplasty is performed under local anesthetic and sedation or a short general anesthetic. Lower lid blepharoplasty requires a general anesthetic. Both can be performed as a day case.
Post-operative there may be some mild swelling or bruising which usually settles well. Stitches are removed at 5 – 7 days and the patient can return to work by 10 – 14 days.
Upper and lower lid blepharoplasty are frequently used in combination with an endoscopic browlift and facelift techniques to achieve a full, harmonious rejuvenation of the face and neck regions.
